The music industry in Indonesia welcomes a new meaningful color through The Lanang Band, a pop rock band consisting of four multi-talented teenagers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). They officially released their debut single titled ‘Aku Istimewa’ on January 17, 2026. Formed on October 1, 2025 in Jakarta, The Lanang Band was initiated by Mira Kohler to accommodate the artistic talents of Individuals with Special Needs (IBK) she encountered. The name “Lanang,” meaning boy in Javanese, reflects the identity of the four members. The four members of The Lanang Band are Fadil (20 years old), who has autism with Asperger’s syndrome and plays guitar, drums, and vocals; Rafif (27 years old), who has ADHD and plays the keyboard and vocals; Rifa (19 years old), who has autism with Asperger’s syndrome and plays drums and vocals; and Vio (20 years old), who has ADHD and serves as the bassist and backing vocals. Each member not only masters one instrument but also has musical abilities that exceed their main roles on stage. ‘Aku Istimewa’ was originally sung by Rifa and composed by Yayang Ariswan. The song was then rearranged with a rock touch by Wawan TMG to sound more dynamic and colorful. The lyrics of the song tell the tale of a child’s determination to prove their worth for their mother’s love, a hope that grows from the warmth of the heart, struggles, and love of a mother who fills every aspect of their life. In a music landscape often dominated by romantic love stories, ‘Aku Istimewa’ serves as a bridge to a different kind of love: a child’s love for their mother, which is timeless. The song is also a bold statement that talent knows no bounds, including boundaries often associated with neurodivergent conditions.
